Coyotes: Animal Control Seeking Options

By Admin2

Coyotes are considered a “game animal,” and are governed by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish & Wildlife.

For that reason, Livingston Police Department Animal Control is not allowed to pursue them.

However, the members of Livingston Animal Control are looking into various options with the state for dealing with these coyotes.

There have been several sightings of coyotes throughout the Township. Many of these are larger than the expected average, because they are a cross-breed coyote. Rather than an approximate 40 lb. maximum, some local animals appear to be upward of 60 lbs.

Coyotes are omnivorous, so they will eat — or try to eat — nearly anything.  Please be vigilant, particularly in the evenings when coyotes are more active.  Do not leave dogs or small children outside unattended.

We understand the concern that has arisen over these recent sightings, and are working to find options we can pursue, in conjunction with the State DEP.
