Construction

Building a New Structure:

Whether a residential or commercial structure, you must apply for a Water & Sewer Connection Permit  from the Livingston Building Department.

Renovating an Existing Structure:

Once the Building Department reviews your initial plans, they will tell you if you need upgrade to a larger-size water service line; if so, you must apply for a Water & Sewer Connection Permit

Permit & Fee Schedule Links:

Demolition

Before Demolishing any Existing Structure:

  1. Water and Sewer services must be capped.
  2. The water meter must be removed and should be returned to the Township.
  3. “Water and Sewer Demolition Letters” must be issued by the Building Department once services are capped.

 


Water Meters

Both new and replacement water meters must be purchased from the Township. This ensures that they are consistent and work seamlessly with Township systems.

Cost:

The price of a meter varies depending on the size of the water service line.

The Building Department will determine the size of the water service line after reviewing your initial plans.

Once the Building Department has advised you of the size of your water service line, complete the Meter Application Form.

Return the completed Meter Application Form with your check for the correct amount made out to “Township of Livingston”:

Purchasing a Meter for New Construction:

  1. Complete and submit your Application form
  2. The Building Department will determine the size of the water service line.
  3. Once the size of the water service line is determined, we will let you know the size of the meter.
  1. Initial Application can be filled out online and then brought to the Township of Livingston or sent via email to water@livingstonnj.org.
  2. Payments must be made by check, made out to “Township of Livingston”:

Water Shutoffs & Hydrant Flow Tests

To shut off the water service:

  1. Locate your water meter and attempt to shut off the water at the meter.
  1. If you are not able to shut off the water at the meter, you may need the Township to shut off the water at the curb.

Call in advance to schedule an appointment with the Township’s Water Department at 973-535-7951 or email water@livingstonnj.org.

  • We will locate the shutoff, check to ensure that the shutoff is in good repair, and shut off the water service properly.

Contractors & Developers:

If you need a hydrant flow test performed, the Township will arrange for the flow test for a fee of $50.

Note: The Township does not perform the hydrant flow tests; we arrange for and oversee the test.
